Faithful Elephant

Faithful Elephant

"If they can live a little longer, the war may end and they will be saved"

This is a story about three faithful elephants in Japan.
During the Pacific War, there were wonderful elephants at the Ueno Zoo.
The elephants were John, Tonky and Wanly They could do tricks. Visitors to the zoo loved to see their tricks. But the situation was getting worse. Bombs were dropped on Tokyo everyday. Then, the zookeepers ordered the zoo to kill all the dangerous animals such as lions, tigers and bears.  Zookeepers did not want to kill them but they had to fallow the order.
They decided to stop giving them anything to eat. The three elephants were gradually weakening.
However, they stood up and raised their trunk in the air to get food and water, when a keeper walked by their cage.
A few days later, they finally died.

Today, the tree elephants rest in peace with other animals under the monument at the Ueno Zoo.

This is the most favorite story for me.
When I read this story, I hoped the war ends soon and they want to be saved.
Until I read this book, I didn't know that not only humans but also animals were affected by the war.
I hope this world to be a peaceful without war.
